Emergency water extraction is the first hour of a water job. Pulling standing water off the slab and out of the carpet removes far more water than any fan, so the drying that follows goes faster.
- Why first
- Liquid water out first. Fans only move what is left.
- Time matters
- Clean water left sitting turns dirty, faster in heat.
- Carpet and pad
- Pad soaks up water and is often pulled.

Why extraction comes before fans
A fan can only dry what it can reach. When there is water standing on tile or soaked into pad, a fan just stirs damp air around a puddle. Extraction pulls the liquid out with weighted and truck or portable units so the air movers and dehumidifiers can deal with what is left inside the materials.
Every hour water sits, it climbs the drywall and creeps under base and cabinets. Extraction early is the cheapest part of the whole job, and it is the part that saves the most.
Clean water does not stay clean
Water from a burst supply line starts as Category 1. It does not stay that way. Water breaks down over time, faster when it is warm, and clean water that mixes with dirt in the house counts as contaminated. A bad smell is one sign it has turned. In a Las Vegas summer garage or closed house, that change can come quickly.
Once water is Category 2 or 3, more has to be thrown out and the crew needs more protection. Getting it out early keeps it in the clean column.
What gets pulled and what stays
| Material | Usually | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Carpet pad | Removed | It holds water like a sponge and is cheap to replace. |
| Carpet | Often saved with clean water | Pulled back, extracted and dried. Not saved with sewage. |
| Tile and stone | Stays | Water is pulled from the surface and grout lines. |
| Laminate | Often removed | Water gets trapped under it and it swells. |
| Wood floors | Dried in place first | Boards that cup are not sanded until moisture is normal. |
What you can do before we get there
- Shut off the water at the main or the fixture.
- Stay out of standing water near outlets and appliances.
- Take photos and video of every wet room before you move things.
- Lift furniture legs onto foil or wood blocks.
- Move rugs, papers and photos to a dry room.
Do not use a household vacuum on water. Do not turn on the HVAC if water reached the air handler or ducts.
