Flood cleanup after a Las Vegas monsoon storm means treating the water as Category 3, because rain that ran across the ground outside carries whatever it picked up on the way in.

When the valley floods
The Clark County Regional Flood Control District puts it plainly. July through September are the monsoon months, and they bring sudden downpours and rapid flash flooding, even on sunny days. Most rainstorms only last a couple of hours. The trouble is how much water arrives in that time on ground that does not soak it up.
The District says 2026 counts 113 detention basins and more than 722 miles of channels and storm drains, with about 75 percent of its master plan built. That system protects most homes most of the time. Water still finds door thresholds, low garages, patio slabs that slope the wrong way and roofs with tired flashing.
Safety comes before cleanup
- Six inches of water is enough to lose control of a vehicle, and one foot of water can float most cars, per the District. Do not drive to your house through a flooded street.
- Do not switch power on or off while standing in water.
- If you smell gas, leave and call from outside.
- Never run a generator or gas pump inside or within 20 feet of doors, windows or vents.
How flood cleanup is different
Floodwater from outside is Category 3. That changes the job.
- Mud and debris come out first, shoveled and bagged.
- Porous things that soaked in it, like pad, carpet, insulation and the bottom of the drywall, are removed. A flood cut takes the wall out above the water line.
- Hard surfaces are cleaned with detergent and water and sanitized.
- Then drying starts, with readings taken until the structure matches the dry standard.
Cleaning with bleach is not the first step. CDC says if you use it, no more than 1 cup per gallon of water, and never mix it with ammonia.
The insurance part nobody likes
Standard home, condo and renters policies exclude flood. Coverage for flood comes from the National Flood Insurance Program or a private flood policy. Wind driven rain through a roof that was damaged in the same storm can be a different story than water that came across the ground. Write down where the water came in and take photos of it before anything is cleaned. That detail matters to an adjuster.
