Sewage cleanup is Category 3 work, so anything porous that touched the water comes out, hard surfaces get cleaned and sanitized, and the area is dried and checked before it is closed up.
- Water type
- Sewage is Category 3, the worst kind.
- Keep out
- Kids, pets and anyone with a weak immune system.
- Drains
- Stop using toilets and drains until it is fixed.
- Call

Toilet overflow or sewer backup
A toilet that overflows with clean tank water is a different job from one that overflows with waste. A toilet overflow with urine but no feces is Category 2. Waste, or water that came up a floor drain or tub from the sewer, is Category 3. EPA advises calling a pro with contaminated water experience for that.
When several drains back up at once, the problem is usually the main line, not the toilet. Stop using every drain and call a plumber to clear it.
What comes out
- Carpet and pad that sewage touched.
- Drywall and insulation below the water line, cut above it.
- Particle board vanities and cabinet bottoms that soaked it up.
- Soft goods like rugs and towels that got wet.
Tile, sealed concrete and solid wood can usually be cleaned and stay.
The cleanup order
- Contain the area so the crew does not track it through the house.
- Remove liquid and solids.
- Take out porous materials.
- Clean hard surfaces with detergent and water, then sanitize.
- Dry the structure and check readings against the dry standard.
- Only then rebuild.
Coverage is often missing
Sewer backup is not covered by a typical home policy unless you added it as an endorsement. Many people find this out the day it happens. A toilet that overflowed because a supply valve failed can be treated differently from sewage that backed up from the street. Take photos of where the water came from before cleanup starts.
